Uruguay, the smallest country in South America, forms a wedge between Argentina on the west and Brazil on the north and east. On the south is the Atlantic Ocean and the RIO DE LA PLATA estuary. The Uruguay River follows the country's western border, suggesting the name during the colonial period--Banda Oriental (east bank). Almost half of Uruguay's inhabitants live in MONTEVIDEO, the capital and only large city.
