Nicaragua is the largest and least densely populated country of Central
America. It borders on Honduras on the North, The Caribbean Sea on the east, Costa Rica on
the south, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. A tropical land of lakes and volcanoes, cool
mountains, torrid plains, and sweltering jungles, it is home to an ethnically diverse
population of mestizos (persons mixed white and Indian ancestry), white, Indians, and
blacks. As in the rest of central America, the economy is based on agriculture. Nicaragua
is the land of poets; Ruben Dario is the cultural figure and the founder of Spanish
American modernism.
