CONTINGENT: The Maltese Center
                        New York, NY

COORDINATED BY: Mr. Charles DeMicoli, Secretary

The Republic of Malta is located in Europe in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, consisting of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. Independent since 1964, Malta, though only 120 square miles and one of the world's most populated countries, has a rich and colorful history, with each empire in Europe leaving its footprints in the Maltese culture. A visitor to Malta can see a number of prehistoric temples that are over 6,000 years old, beautifully adorned churches. Malta is blessed with many natural harbors, bays, creeks and sandy beaches and a Mediterranean climate. Ship-repair, tourism, commercial fishing, agriculture and light manufacturing are the main industries. Main exports are potatoes, oranges, tomatoes and wine. The Maltese language originated from the Phoenician language, has a semitic structure and has absorbed a considerable number of romance words.
