The first black republic in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti shares the island with the Dominican Republic. She is a tropical country and became independent on January 1, 1807.

The capital is Port-au-Prince. Haiti held her first democratic election on December 16, 1990. Haiti has two languages; Creole and French.
