JOSE
FELICIANO, INVESTED AS AMBASSADOR TO THE UN TO FURTHER IMMIGRANT
CAUSES.
Renowned singer and composer Jose
Feliciano was invested Monday as Honorary Ambassador and Official
Delegate before the United Nations of the International Immigrants
Foundation, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
The event, sponsored by the H.E.
Luis Gallegos-Chiriboga and H.E. Manuel Felix, U. N. Representatives
of Ecuador and Dominican Republic, respectively, was widely attended
by the diplomatic corps, including representatives of Venezuela,
Germany, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Paraguay, Pakistan,
Chile, Brazil, Libya, Croatia and El Salvador, among many others.
His Excellency Luis Gallegos-Chiriboga
spoke about his personal admiration for the great achievements, both
artistic and personal, realized by Mr. Feliciano; and Ambassador
Felix pointed out the continental unity that his music and persona
represent. Edward Juarez-Pagliocco, founder and president of the
International Immigrants Foundation, while placing the investiture
band on Mr. Feliciano, commented: “Jose Feliciano is a man of great
sensitivity who symbolizes multiculturalism, and as a member of the
world community, he is a powerful spokesperson to unite peoples as a
bridge for cultural understanding.”
Founded in 1973, the International
Immigrants Foundation is dedicated to improving the immigrant’s
basic needs, by providing direct access to legalization,
naturalization, as well as programs that facilitate acculturation to
the American way of life. The
International Immigrants Foundation provides access to
immediate legal assistance and organizes multicultural programs such
as the International Cultures Celebration to promote positive
intercultural relations and help change the negative perceptions
that exist about today’s immigrants.
A chamber orchestra conducted by
Frank Valiente, interpreting Scenes from Tango and Life, provided
the musical entertainment. Feliciano, a six time grammy winner, said
in his acceptance speech that, “although I was born in Puerto Rico,
a U. S. protectorate, I feel like an immigrant, because I had to
learn English and adapt to the new environment when I came to New
York at 5 years old. I thank America for the opportunity that she
has given me to succeed in this great country.”
Edward Juarez-Pagliocco stated that
Mr. Feliciano was designated to be the honorary ambassador and
spokesperson of the International Immigrants Foundation, because of
his knowledge, sensitivity and understanding of the hardships
experienced by immigrants who attempt to fit into the dominant
culture.
For 30 years, the Foundation has
been helping, guiding and strengthening immigrants so that they may
become productive U.S. Citizens. Mr. Feliciano has embraced the
Foundation’s mission, and is fully committed to work for and
champion the advancement of immigrant’s rights.
There is
